Edit and Share Your Patches

Zoom's Edit and Share software is available through a free download and allows you to use your computer to intuitively create, edit and save your own, personalized amp and effect settings. Use Zoom's "radar charts" to show a visual representation of the tone characteristics of each preset patch. And amp/effect type sorting helps you quickly find the tone you are after. Using drag and drop to rearrange patches makes editing easy and fun, and you can even download the latest patches online. You can even share your patches with others or download a cool patch someone else created.

Direct Mode Optimized for Recording

All 30 drive sounds have a special modeling algorithm designed specifically for line recording. Simply turn on the DIRECT key on the top panel and enjoy dynamic amp sounds that recreate the ideal speaker cabinet characteristics over a flat response audio system or headphones. Of course, this mode works perfectly for direct recording to a DAW application via the USB audio interface.

20 Patches Created by Steve Vai

The G2.1Nu features 20 highly creative and versatile patches produced under the supervision of master guitarist Steve Vai. Also included are dozens of presets that authentically recreate the vintage rock sounds of the sixties and seventies, plus the styles of many famous artists. With 100 patches right out of the box, you can create your own and save up to 100 more right on the pedal.

Smooth Tube Distortion Models Made Possible by the ZFX-3 Processor

To recreate the rich blend of harmonics in the upper frequency ranges that are unique to tube amplifiers, you need a powerful, fast processor. Thanks to its high-resolution signal processing using 96 kHz sampling and 24-bit A/D/A conversion, the advanced ZFX-3 sound engine implements complex digital modeling technology to convincingly recreate those subtle tube amp characteristics.

Large LCD Panel

One of the most important and useful new additions to the G2.1Nu is its large 1.9 inch display. This new screen makes creating your own sounds a breeze. But the interface is also simplified with three large control knobs to make changing your tone similar to a stomp box, making the overall operation easy and intuitive.

83 Guitar Effect Types

Ranging from standard to advanced, nine modules with 83 high-quality effects provide unsurpassed flexibility and tonal variation. Choose effects like the MXR Dynacomp, famed for its peculiar compression, Vox Crybaby and other renowned wah pedals, four types of chorus with great depth and ambiance, and six types of reverb providing transparent clarity. Or let your tonal imagination run free with dynamic flangers, tremolo with selectable modulation waveform, harmonized pitch shifter, multi-tap delay, reverse delay and many more.

Auto-Chromatic Tuner with LED Indication

The LCD display and LED indicators make its auto-chromatic tuner easy to use on a dark stage. Its mute tuning capability is also very useful on stage.

Integrated Drum Machine with PCM Sound Sources

Choose from 40 different rhythm patterns including 8-beat and 16-beat as well as 4-beat, shuffle and many other variations. The intuitive tap key makes it easy to directly set the tempo. Start a jam session anytime, anywhere.

Looper Function Records up to 5 Seconds

Use its 5 second looper function to record, playback and overdub guitar phrases that can be controlled with your pedal. This "sound-on-sound" feature lets you lay down phrases in real time, and during a live solo, you can use the looped sound as backing.

Ultra-Low-Noise Design

Specifications such as a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB and noise floor of -100 dBm provide a level of performance that is unsurpassed. Background noise is effectively eliminated, and Zoom's proprietary ZNR noise reduction also removes unwanted noise. Even the tails of sustained notes come out beautifully, with natural release.

Extremely Fast 5ms Patch Change

With its amazing patch change speed of only 5 milliseconds, the G2.1Nu allows you to never miss a beat. Change from rhythm playing to a solo in an instant by simply pushing the switch and start playing the solo phrase at the same time because the muting interval when switching patches has been reduced to an absolute minimum.

Optional Footswitch Allows Versatile Remote Operation

The optional foot switch (FS01) allows tap tempo input for rhythm, looper, and effects. Other selectable functions include rhythm pattern start/stop, bank switching, delay input muting, and delay hold on/off switching.

Expression Pedal Adds Further Versatility to Your Guitar Play

You can connect an optional expression pedal (FP02) to control effect parameters such as wah, pitch shift, volume, drive gain, modulation rate, or delay/reverb mix in real time. The G2.1Nu has a built-in expression pedal and a dedicated PEDAL ASSIGN key which makes it easy to select the effect you want control on any patch setting. Effect on/off switching is also possible by pushing the pedal fully down.

Heavy-Duty Construction and Slim Size

While offering performance and functions far beyond its class, the G2.1Nu has a sturdy metal chassis that can stand up to the rigors of the road, yet, it's still compact enough to fit into the pocket of a guitar case. Wherever you need it: on tour, in the studio, or rehearsals, the G2.1Nu is ready to rock.

Runs on Batteries, AC Adapter, or USB Phantom Power

The G2.1Nu can use three different power sources: AC adapter, batteries or USB bus power when plugged into your computer. Four AA / LR6 alkaline batteries are good for 6.5 hours of continuous use. Whether in the studio or on stage, the G2.1Nu gives you power options that work.

Bundled with Cubase LE

Cubase LE 4 is a powerful music production system that can handle recording, editing, and mixing tasks both for audio and for MIDI. It incorporates the same audio engine as the multi-award winning, higher-level version Cubase 4, and is ideal as an entry into computer-based music production.

Zoom ZG21NU Guitar Multi Effects Pedal and USB Interface Review

The Zoom processor, which I bought from Amazon, doesn't have all the information you'd probably like. I'll list some things you might find interesting or helpful:

The different sounds (or "patches" as they are called in the manual) are mostly for lead guitar-rock lead guitar, really. There are some really plain patches, too. But the preset patches won't help you much for playing rhythm guitar for "top 40", jazz, blues, etc.

Good luck finding any sounds you like without changing them at least somewhat.

The instruction book is confusing or wrong, depending on how you look at it. There is a list of the patches (sounds), each with a letter designation, like "A8" is called "Juice". These are the presets, right? No, they aren't-the presets start with a number, like "08". So although you think you can save your altered sounds (and you will have to alter them, I promise-and it's not difficult at all), the unit won't let you save to the "user banks"-the numbered, not lettered banks-know why? The numbered banks are the presets (you can't change them) sounds and the lettered banks are the user banks. This will mean little to you unless you buy a unit and try to save a sound you've created. Just remember-even though it doesn't make sense, the numbered banks are the presets, the lettered banks are user banks (storage places for your sounds). If you read the manual and accompanying guide, you'll probably think it's the other way around.

Zoom has a technical support number for the unit-which I found out by calling a guitar shop-I couldn't find it on the Internet. They know what they are talking about if you have problems.

There is a program-Goggle "Zoom G2.1Nu Edit and Share" which you can download and make editing the sounds much easier than turning the knobs and changing effects and saving, etc. It shows you the whole layout of what you're doing and is much faster than doing it with just the unit itself. Also you don't have to worry about the "is it a number or a letter?" problem above.

Don't forget you absolutely need the proper USB cable to connect the processor to your computer, which you will have to do to get updates for the firmware of the processor, use "Edit and Share", etc. The USB cable is an absolute necessity.

If you choose battery operation instead of the wall-wart, you can get about 6 hours from 4 AA batteries. This is a bigger deal than you might think if you've never had a processor-having to plug a processor into the wall instead of it being battery-powered is one pain in the neck. Use alkaline batteries-you can buy large packs (like 48 batteries) from any discount (e.g. Sam's, BJ's, etc.) inexpensively compared to buying packs of 4 or 8 at the grocery store. Being able to use batteries is a huge plus for this unit (I have a Digitech which only plugs in-so I speak from experience).

Don't buy this unit thinking you'll be using the tuner. To use the tuner, unlike other petals, you must pick the processor up, push some buttons, turn a knob, etc. You sure you want to do that while you're playing in front of people-with the manual in hand because you've forgotten the steps? It's a pain even if you are practicing-buy a separate (maybe Korg) tuner instead. NOTE: Revised forecast-comment from Guitar 1969 is absolutely correct-if you don't want to use the manual 4-step procedure, just push both petals down simultaneously and there's your tuner. That's what experience will do for you-thanks, Guitar 1969.

Oh, another thing to have to save the sanity of the people in your house:either headphones with a 1/4 jack (like your guitar) or headphones with a minijack and an adapter to a 1/4 inch plug so you can plug the earphones directly into the processor. You'll have fun changing the sounds and trying them out, but other people in the house might be less enthusiastic about hearing 16 different types of distortion from your amp as you try and figure out which one you like best-headphones instead of an amp makes everyone happy.:>}

The unit is well-built and easily worth the money. I hope these comments save you some time and frustration.
