Product Description

You don't have to be the Duke to end up with an iron lung of your own... okay, that's just wrong! Actually, the Iron Lung vocoder pedal by electro-harmonix, when used for the powers of goodness instead of evil, is really quite cool. If you want a cool effect you can use on stage to get anything from vocoded vocals to Frampton-esk talkbox solos, without having to put down your faithful axe and switch over to keys (yikes!), then the Iron Lung is for you. Keep it subtle or go all New York Dolls with it and do some freaky gender bending... er... but with your voice. Despite its simple layout - just a tone knob, a gender knob, and a 3-way mic gain level switch - the 256-band Iron lung provides spot on vocoding with a ton of range. So, whether you're looking for that classic vocoder sound or just want a sweet little tone toy to spice things up with, you'll get what you're after from the electro-harmonix Iron Lung.

Electro-Harmonix Iron Lung Vocoder Pedal Review

I like this pedal, because it doesn't have a bunch of confusing knobs, cost a ton of money, and fits my requirement of "must be boss/maxon pedal size or smaller". I hate bulky pedals, and Electro-Harmonix is a bulkiness culprit, but not here, thankfully.

Its actually a tad smaller than an old mxr distortion+, and more than likely you will use the switch more often than the knobs, which is what I wanted. While it doesn't sound like the album version of King Crimson's "The Power to Believe" should you play/sing it, it does sound like the live version.

The issue you will have is how to use it. You may have to have a really clean amp perhaps digital, or plug it into a PA or run it direct to what ever.

For distortion, not sure if should go before or after a distortion or overdrive, or work better with a amp sim. I suspect the former. People have gotten this thing to make dreamy talk box sounds. So its kind of a Talk Box/Vocoder in one, and more for the guitarist anyway, though keyboardists may dig this too.

I like user friendly, low cost sonic gizmos, so I give it 5 stars though I'm still in the learning curve.

I received it quickly and in time for a recording session.
