I've never written a review of anything online before but was compelled because this pedal is something of a minor miracle:

For months, I'd been trying out several different fuzz pedals to replicate the late 60s British fuzz tone used by King Crimson. Fuzz Faces, Big Muffs, Mxr's, you name it. Nothing quite nailed it. At the same time, I'd also been hunting down a Sola Sound Tone Bender MK1, the long lost Holy Grail of British fuzzes in order to recreate Mick Ronson's tone. Clones cost upward of $400 & I was about to give up on both pedals altogether.

On a whim, I checked out Amazon to see what they had to offer & found the Boutique Handmade USA Fuzz Pedal (with genuine Germanium transistors!). At a relatively low $100 price tag, I figured it was worth the risk. Admittedly, my expectations weren't very high. But once I plugged this pedal into my signal chain & hit that first chord.. my jaw was on the floor. THIS was the classic late 60s British fuzz tone I'd been looking for. It was a PERFECT recreation. Then I flipped the switch to the Tonebender position &, with a little adjustment, laid into the opening chords of "Ziggy Stardust " ... WOW! I'd found classic Fripp & Ronno in a SINGLE pedal! Simply incredible.

The Boutique Handmade USA Germanium Fuzz Pedal has a permanent place on my pedalboard & I plan on buying another one ASAP to use as a spare.

It's the best kept secret on the fuzz pedal market.

Moen MO-FM Fuzz Moo "Fuzz Distortion" Effects Pedal Review

I heard rumors of this pedal being the Chinese rip-off version of the EHX Russian Big Muff. Having previously owned both a green and black Russian, I can happily say that it does indeed remind me strongly of the black Russian Big Muff.

Its not an exact copy though, here are a few key differences (aside from it having a big cow head on the front):

1. It is indeed true bypass, which is helpful as the black russian definitely did color the clean signal.

2. It has a 9v battery adapter, which is GREAT, as the black russian DIDN'T have that at all, and was quite a battery eater.

3. Its quite a bit hotter than the russian, and you can absolutely cake your signal with gain if you so choose. This makes it an excellent choice for stoner rock and doom metal, and I was getting some awesome near-Kyuss tones with my Ibanez running it into my 70's Kasino Lounge bass amp. The downside to the massive gain is that its also quite a bit less subtle than the russian could be. With the gain knob low on the Fuzz Moo, you still get a fair amount of fuzz, so don't expect a suble effect, you'll never wonder whether this pedal is on or off.

4. The Tone knob has a different sweep than the black russian, which I actually like quite a bit. Its not as severe, almost acting as a high end roll off more than a standard bass/treble +/- style tone knob. It may limit the full range of tones you can get, but its much easier to dial in a subtle change and find that sweet spot.

All in all, a solid pedal, and a great option for those lamenting the discontinuation of the russian Big Muffs (which are now going for ridiculous prices on eBay). The construction is solid, with a tough metal shell and sturdy knobs (another nice change from the russian, where it seemed like a slight breeze would move the setting knobs), and the sound is great, everything you'd want from a russian copy.

An absolute steal for $50.

p.s. For those wondering if it works with a bass, I've tried it with both my P bass and my J bass and it was very easy to find a good fuzz tone with suitable bottom end. So those bassists out there who love their russians, this should work out for you pretty well.

EDIT: After giving it a few weeks for the "honeymoon period" to wear off, I tried the Fuzz Moo on guitar AND bass side by side with both my EXH Bass Big Muff and EHX Little Big Muff. I was absolutely SHOCKED by how easily the Fuzz Moo beat both Muffs. Both Muffs have since been sold and the Fuzz Moo stands supreme.

I know tone is subjective and your milage may differ, etc. but I for one want to say "Thank you Moen!" for doing EHX better (and cheaper!) than EHX currently does!

DR Strings Hi-Beam Flats - Flatwound Stainless Steel Round Core Bass 45-105 Review

I just put these strings on. I am a big fan of DR's. I've tried many, many, flatwounds. Including D'Addario, Labella, Thomastik, Rotosound, GHS, Fender and many tapewounds as well. These stack up well to all and outshine most. They are most comparable to the Thomastik although significantly cheaper. There are things that I like about the Labella's better but the DR's are far more "playable" in that they don't feel as stiff as many flats which to me is similar to the Thomastiks. They are not as Fat sounding as Labella's and not as Jamerson-y. However they have a very clear, very interesting sound that is very usable.
