I've owned a few silicone fuzzes over the years and even built a fuzz face from scratch, using vintage germanium transistors. Most sounded cool but really, few produced much of a usable tone. None captured the creamy vintage sound that Hendrix seemed to have with a fuzz.

The Electro Harmonix Germanium 4 does that. It does what I imagine what a fuzz pedal should. Smooth overdrive to saturated distortion with lots of room in between. With the G4, which has two separate sections, you get two pedals for the price of one. Plus, you can stack them together to get an even wider range of sounds.

The overdrive section ranges from clean boost to mild overdrive. Great for playing blues to classic rock, or for adding boost to a clean signal. The right side, "distortion" part, is more like a conventional fuzz box, but you get the added bonus of bias and volt knobs which give you extra sound options. You can turn both the overdrive and distortion buttons on at the same time for massive distortion sounds. Here, with all the EQ options active, you have a ton of sound possibilities.

I love this pedal and, like the other reviewer, I also have a lot to compare this to. For a hundred bucks, this one is a steal and fantastic value. One of my best purchases. Made in the USA and it even comes with a battery in it from the factory!
