I heard rumors of this pedal being the Chinese rip-off version of the EHX Russian Big Muff. Having previously owned both a green and black Russian, I can happily say that it does indeed remind me strongly of the black Russian Big Muff.

Its not an exact copy though, here are a few key differences (aside from it having a big cow head on the front):

1. It is indeed true bypass, which is helpful as the black russian definitely did color the clean signal.

2. It has a 9v battery adapter, which is GREAT, as the black russian DIDN'T have that at all, and was quite a battery eater.

3. Its quite a bit hotter than the russian, and you can absolutely cake your signal with gain if you so choose. This makes it an excellent choice for stoner rock and doom metal, and I was getting some awesome near-Kyuss tones with my Ibanez running it into my 70's Kasino Lounge bass amp. The downside to the massive gain is that its also quite a bit less subtle than the russian could be. With the gain knob low on the Fuzz Moo, you still get a fair amount of fuzz, so don't expect a suble effect, you'll never wonder whether this pedal is on or off.

4. The Tone knob has a different sweep than the black russian, which I actually like quite a bit. Its not as severe, almost acting as a high end roll off more than a standard bass/treble +/- style tone knob. It may limit the full range of tones you can get, but its much easier to dial in a subtle change and find that sweet spot.

All in all, a solid pedal, and a great option for those lamenting the discontinuation of the russian Big Muffs (which are now going for ridiculous prices on eBay). The construction is solid, with a tough metal shell and sturdy knobs (another nice change from the russian, where it seemed like a slight breeze would move the setting knobs), and the sound is great, everything you'd want from a russian copy.

An absolute steal for $50.

p.s. For those wondering if it works with a bass, I've tried it with both my P bass and my J bass and it was very easy to find a good fuzz tone with suitable bottom end. So those bassists out there who love their russians, this should work out for you pretty well.

EDIT: After giving it a few weeks for the "honeymoon period" to wear off, I tried the Fuzz Moo on guitar AND bass side by side with both my EXH Bass Big Muff and EHX Little Big Muff. I was absolutely SHOCKED by how easily the Fuzz Moo beat both Muffs. Both Muffs have since been sold and the Fuzz Moo stands supreme.

I know tone is subjective and your milage may differ, etc. but I for one want to say "Thank you Moen!" for doing EHX better (and cheaper!) than EHX currently does!
