SHUBB Guitar Steel SP3 Sally Van Meter Design Review

This was my second steel. The first was an SP1, also made by Shubb. It was well made, but it wasn't tall enough for my hands to get a good grip. I got this one next, partly because I liked the size better, but also because I like Sally Van Meter, by whom it was designed. (I used to see her with The Good Ole Persons band in San Francisco 20+ years ago).

Instead of a resonator guitar, I play on a standard dreadnought guitar with the nut and saddle raised. The weight of the bar feels good to me and it gives good clean tone. If it had a sharper edge for even cleaner pulloffs I'd have given it a 5 star rating. Of course, my playing technique isn't exactly professional, not even close, so I may revise my thinking as I get more proficient.

I recently tried the Shubb GS (hardwood and stainless steel design) which I like, but have some reservations about. With the curved top it is very comfortable for my slightly older hands, but I find that the stainless steel part is too light. I don't get the strong attack and the notes don't ring as long as with the heavier bar. I'm considering trying to retrofit a curved top to the Sally Van Meter SP3.
