Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines, 6 In-Line setup, Chrome Review

After reading the negative reviews, I was very pleased to find that my set did not require the replacement pins. I've had no problems with the e/b strings and I very much enjoy the 18:1 gear ratio. Further, my set came with the offset screw like in the picture, while some others have received sets with the centered screw--for me this meant I could use a pre-existing screw hole instead of drill a new one.

I researched various brands of locking tuners prior to ordering my own set of these. According to many reviews, I've heard the following most frequently mentioned, without observing such firsthand myself (unless otherwise noted):

*Schaller pins can come off unexpectedly, and the gear ratio is poor for the price- 12:1 or 14:1 I believe.
*Sperzel may be having quality control issues, and the gear ratio is also low for the price.
*Grover is praised and has an 18:1 ratio, but there is no concave indent around the post, which may lead to string slippage. (I own a set but have not tried them out yet)
*Gotoh sounds pretty reliable, but you don't get the autotrim feature. They may work faster without the separate knob for a cam pin, though from what I've seen Gotoh is usually the most expensive.
*Guitar Fetish has the cheapest sets if that's what you're after. They work hold the tuning well, but there's no listed gear ratio on the website nor trimming feature. They come staggered so you don't need string trees, a nice feature which the more expensive sets seldom incorporate. (I own a set, and for $36 they really get the job done.)
*D'addario's planet waves. Some people received sets from the bad batch, and some sets have a centered pin while others have the offset one, the latter consistent with most brands' screw positioning. However, if you get a good batch, you'll get three amazing features: functional locking, auto-trimming, and an 18:1 gear ratio. Some folks don't like the color scheme, though my guitar was already black and chrome so it worked.

Each brand has its inherent strengths and weaknesses, and in some cases you'll pay $20+ more for a name than what features the item provides. The planet waves set seemed to me to have the greatest cost/benefit ratio despite the risk of receiving an older defective set, and I'm very satisfied with my decision. In the future, I'll be sticking with these again. If I should receive a "bad" set, I think that customer service will remedy the problem.

I went for this strap instead of the lone ones as I would get ten Taylor picks - for the same price as just buying the strap. Common sense, right? However, when I received my strap, I got three Planet Wave picks instead. One brief phone call later, and I had my ten Taylor picks being sent priority mail. Although it was slightly disappointing that I got the wrong picks initially (I've heard of this happening to other people, as well), I can't say no to free picks!

As far as the strap goes, it is certainly a high quality item. The end hole does not fit very well on my strap peg on the bottom of my Taylor, but once I get it on well enough, it doesn't budge. As it's suede, it takes some getting use to - when you put it on, it pretty much stays in place, so if you like swinging your guitar, you're pretty limited in that aspect. However, it certainly looks very nice, and I will happily purchase more when I buy more Taylors. :)

DiMarzio Twang King Neck/Bridge Pickup Set for Tele Review

I'm not one to write reviews because I seldom feel like I have anything to say that hasn't been said before. But after my experience with the Dimarzio Twang Set, I have been inspired to write a review because of how much I love them and how different they are from everything else I've tried.

I was never happy with the stock pickups in my 2010 MIM Tele, so not long after owning it I started trying different pickups. To date I've had 6 sets of pickups in this Tele. They were, in the below order:

The stock pickup Set
Fender Nocaster Set
Fender Original Vintage Set
Seymour Duncan Vintage Set
Wilde Dleuxe Keystone Set

and finally....
The Dimarzio Twang King Set

I'm not here to bash any brand/design of pickups. You might be inclined to ask, "what were you looking for, specifically, that you couldn't find in the first 5 pickup sets you tried and aren't they all more or less the "same"?" No, and here's what I was looking for:

1. Sweet and even tone from the neck pickup, think 60's era bell-like strat tones.
2. Twangy and non-ice-pickey tone from the bridge pickup.
3. A clean and sweet tone from the in-between position.
4. An utterly uncompressed and natural tone and clarity, not exaggerated lows and/or highs.
5. Note seperation, being able to cleary hear every note of a 6-string chord.
6. The desire to keep playing because the sound is just so good you can't stop.
7. Responsiveness. This is a tricky one. The notes should jump out and present themselves naturally. I'm of the opinion that this is the most important aspect of the tone for me personally.

I've spent way too much time at local big name guitar stores trying every Tele I could get my hands on and I can say this 100% truthfully: These are the best pickups I have heard in a Tele, period. They fit my needs perfectly.

Now for the downside. To those on the fence about what they are looking for in a pickup. Because of how clean this pickup set is, don't excpect any super high gain chunkiness and fatness, you may be disappointed. These pickups are very low output. On the other hand, they sound fuller in series while remaining clear.

Also, I find the use of "vintage" waxed cloth tinned hookup wire to be archaic and lame. This wire is extremely stiff, prone to breakage, and a waste of space. Could it affect the tone? I highly doubt it because the wires are not shielded either way but who knows. One thing I loved about the Wilde Dleuxe Keystone Set was their use of flexible stranded wire in a plastic jacket. Just my opinion of course! Enjoy your quest for the pickups that allow you to express your creative side and want you to keep playing. For me, it's the Dimarzio Twang King Set.

I have owned and used this pedal for over a year now. It lives in my studio (my gig tube amps have spring reverb) where I have run microphones and guitars through it with great success. EMG 707 7 String Active Guitar Pickup, Black Review

I have long been a DiMarzio man, installing the EVO and X2N passive pickups in all of my guitars. I once swore by passive pickups, hated actives because of the battery, the feedback problems, the sterile sound, installation, tone controls, etc. I haven't been a fan of EMG or Seymour Duncan in the past because both are "mainstream" companies with high prices for PUPs I just didn't find to be worth the money.

However, I bought an Agile Intrepid Pro 8 string which comes stock with the EMG 808. I was noticing the different quality in the recordings I was doing with the guitar. I was having trouble getting the same tone out of my Ibanez RG7A (with DiMarzio Evolutions). I tune really low, drop F. The clarity and punch just was not there. The low registers were sounding floppy. My success with the EMG 808 led me to install the 707 in my RG.

OMG this pickup is amazing! I installed it so I only have a bridge pickup, a volume, and a tone control. My distortion is thick and heavy but has an increased clarity even with such a low tuning. Its very responsive and doesn't have that choppy sound. This is how this guitar was meant to sound, aggressive yet beautiful. Roll down the tone a lil bit and you have awesome clean sounds that are so liquidy. They flow, not an uneven jumble of mess when going across the strings. Every note in a chord rings out and can be heard. When you are playing just individual notes they have a powerful impact, not weak and lonesome sounding. The 707 and 808 may be the only pickups I like by EMG but thats ok because I think they are boss!!! Really improved the sound of my guitar and completely changed my rig as a whole into a versatile monster.

Someone with very light knowledge of guitar wiring shouldn't have much trouble installing this pickup. It comes with plenty of instructions and 99% of the wiring is quick connects (maybe 100% depending on your application). It comes with a 25k volume knob(required with actives) and an output jack. If you have never installed pickups (especially actives) take it to a shop. Comment with questions and I will be more than happy to help with what I can. Be forewarned! Certain guitars may require some modding to get this pickup to fit into the pickup cavities (a Dremell tool will become your best friend). This pickup comes will all necessary pieces to get your install started and in most cases completed.

For about $100 bucks, this pickup is the way to go. Extremely versatile (more than I thought it would be) and very slick sounding. Great improvement for your guitar and ears will thank you for it. Come on, this is all coming from a guy who used to despise every EMG product, so why would I be lieing for them now? :)
