When we decided to go for the vintage Tele® sound, we knew we had to do more than just copy a forty-year-old design. We wanted pickups that captured the best elements of our favorite Broadcaster® and Telecaster® sounds, and then some. The Twang KingTM pickups have unequalled response to pick attack: light playing produces a soft, quiet tone and hard picking creates a harder, louder and more dynamic sound than any comparable single-coil. We accomplished this with a combination of controlled-tension coil-winding, special wire and hand-calibrated magnets. The neck pickup comes with a chrome cover, and the bridge model has a ferrous base plate. Both pickups are wax-potted twice for squeal-free performance.

I'm not one to write reviews because I seldom feel like I have anything to say that hasn't been said before. But after my experience with the Dimarzio Twang Set, I have been inspired to write a review because of how much I love them and how different they are from everything else I've tried.

I was never happy with the stock pickups in my 2010 MIM Tele, so not long after owning it I started trying different pickups. To date I've had 6 sets of pickups in this Tele. They were, in the below order:

The stock pickup Set
Fender Nocaster Set
Fender Original Vintage Set
Seymour Duncan Vintage Set
Wilde Dleuxe Keystone Set

and finally....
The Dimarzio Twang King Set

I'm not here to bash any brand/design of pickups. You might be inclined to ask, "what were you looking for, specifically, that you couldn't find in the first 5 pickup sets you tried and aren't they all more or less the "same"?" No, and here's what I was looking for:

1. Sweet and even tone from the neck pickup, think 60's era bell-like strat tones.
2. Twangy and non-ice-pickey tone from the bridge pickup.
3. A clean and sweet tone from the in-between position.
4. An utterly uncompressed and natural tone and clarity, not exaggerated lows and/or highs.
5. Note seperation, being able to cleary hear every note of a 6-string chord.
6. The desire to keep playing because the sound is just so good you can't stop.
7. Responsiveness. This is a tricky one. The notes should jump out and present themselves naturally. I'm of the opinion that this is the most important aspect of the tone for me personally.

I've spent way too much time at local big name guitar stores trying every Tele I could get my hands on and I can say this 100% truthfully: These are the best pickups I have heard in a Tele, period. They fit my needs perfectly.

Now for the downside. To those on the fence about what they are looking for in a pickup. Because of how clean this pickup set is, don't excpect any super high gain chunkiness and fatness, you may be disappointed. These pickups are very low output. On the other hand, they sound fuller in series while remaining clear.

Also, I find the use of "vintage" waxed cloth tinned hookup wire to be archaic and lame. This wire is extremely stiff, prone to breakage, and a waste of space. Could it affect the tone? I highly doubt it because the wires are not shielded either way but who knows. One thing I loved about the Wilde Dleuxe Keystone Set was their use of flexible stranded wire in a plastic jacket. Just my opinion of course! Enjoy your quest for the pickups that allow you to express your creative side and want you to keep playing. For me, it's the Dimarzio Twang King Set.
