Several brands try to sell "upgrades" to this pickup, and most of them fail completely. This model, along with 498T, make
the duo that equips the top custom guitars by gibson. I've tried lindy fralin, jason lollar, PRS, and they all sound very good,
but it is a matter of taste. One cannot state that one is better than the other. I just take this gibsons as the best value in
classic humbuckers.

In the other hand, some famous brands such as dimarzio, emg, seymour duncan state that they make gibson upgrades.
This is false. Their pickups won't sound bad, if you need hotter output. In the power department, they deliver as advertised.
But if you crave for tone, these classic alnico gibsons (498 and 490) are the ones. They also beat their brothers
(burstbuckers, ceramics 500 and 57s) as "classic versatile rock'n'roll tone".

With dimarzio you'll get clarity (and a somewhat thin tone). With emg you'll get hard, hot, compressed blocky sound, and
it may be the thing you're looking for. Matter of taste. But with duncans you'll get muddy, bassy, fuzzy undefined sound,
only playable through distortion.
