Morley PLA Steve Vai Little Alligator Optical Volume Pedal Review

I purchased the Morley Little Alligator, mostly because I was curious about the optical circuit design. It also seemed that it was built to withstand the rigors of playing shows and traveling. I use it for my pedal steel guitar which depends on a good expressive throw on the treadle to deliver that "cry" and emotion the instrument supplies on all those classic country recordings. Initially, the throw was not working the way I felt a good volume pedal's should. No matter how I set the minimum volume, I could not get the level of expression I was hearing from other steel guitarists and their pedals. There was no wiggle room, mostly on and off. Doing a little research, I found a great video on YouTube demonstrating how the LEDs in the circuit can be adjusted to provide the kind of variance and expression I was looking for in the taper. By opening up the pedal, the layout and LEDs to be adjusted were immediately evident, as well as the ingenious design of the optical application. Keeping the pedal plugged in to the steel and amp, I spread the 2 LEDs accordingly, pulling the most forward one up a little as well, closed it back up and tried it out in earnest. A totally different animal! The pedal has all the expression I could want and the sound is great. Fantastic! I have heard "tone suck" complaints, but I use a buffer in the chain and have not had any tone or volume loss. Quite the opposite. I find the sound rich and substantial. The circuit is quiet and the physical function excellent. The treadle can also be tightened to provide more or less resistance on it's travel. The manual that comes with the pedal also tells how to adjust the LEDs, and for reference the YouTube video shows how to do this in detail. After adjusting the LEDs to suit my needs, I find this pedal to be excellent and problem free. It is a solid piece of work and feels good under foot. Uses 9 volt battery or power plug. Highly recommended for any instrument.
