I was looking for a pedal to simulate the sound of a Fender amp, for situations where I couldn't have a real amp to play. I could've gotten a Line 6 POD X3 Live or a BOSS GT-10, but I already have a pedal set, and just wanted something to simulate the amp. There was the Boss FBM-1 Fender Bassman Pedal, but it appears that it was specially designed to run in front of a JC-120 Roland Jazz Chorus amp, or at least, an amp on clean settings, and that was not what I was looking for. Plus, the samples on the net didn't sound all that good.
I learned about the Character Series pedals after visiting Tech 21 website (creators of Sansamp). After viewing some videos and hearing some sounds, I decided to go with the Blonde. It sounds beautiful, it has great Fender amp style sounds and simulates a real mic'ed amp very accurately. Also, it responds very well to distortion pedals, like the Fulltone OCD.
The nice thing about this pedal is that it has lots of tonal possibilities within the Fender style range of amps, which is great for recording, since it's a lot more practical and a lot more versatile than using a real amp, or amps.
I did an A-B listening with the Blonde and the Bassman simulation on Guitar Rig 3. While Guitar Rig has lots of more options that make a difference on the sound, like mic type and distance, when I turned those down, both sounded very close, the Blonde really impressed me. I also tested it directly plugged into the PA system, it sounded great as well, like a mic'ed amp.
The Blonde also sounded great in the pedal board as a distortion pedal, going to a real amp.
The only problem that I find on this pedal is that the gain knob isn't much usable on the highest settings.
If you like Fender amps and want a wide range of sounds in a very compact package, give this a try.
