Product Description

Fishman's Rare Earth Blend merges the humbucking Rare Earth pickup with a excellent internally mounted microphone for a "best of both worlds" approach to acoustic guitar amplification. The microphone is a mini hypercardioid electret for high volume and low feedback performance. The system combines the percussive attack and controlled sustain of the magnetic pickup with the resonant, ambient qualities captured by an internal microphone. Neodymium (a rare earth element, hence the name Rare Earth pickup) magnets provide excellent string-to-string balance, while the discrete circuitry keeps the Rare Earth's signal pure and clean.

Fishman Rare Earth Blend Pickup Review

This is the best acoustic pickup/mic I have ever used, in 20 years of using electronics. I have used soundhole pickups, under-saddle pickups (which I hate as they never sound like a real guitar). Previously I was using an internal gooseneck condenser mic with adequate results, but found the sound a bit thin when i used effects. Using a Taylor 510, in a huge church through a mixer into the PA system. Switching to the Fishman was like night and day; was able to dial a blend easily to give my sound some nice full bottom without sacrificing treble. I also found that when i used effects, dialing to the magnetic pickup gave better results. A previous reviewer complained about the mic position; I find it is in an optimal position and have not felt the need to move it; in fact my old gooseneck was annoying because it would eventually drift into a position that was either too much bass or too much treble. I have never felt the need to move the Fishman mic at all.
I decided to retire my Taylor, and have now moved and play in a Church about one fifth the size of the other. I now use an Epiphone Masterbilt 500 (all solid wood, mahogany and spruce), and the pickup continues to be stunning. As I said I much prefer this to an undersaddle piezo; undersaddle combos just seem to "boingy" or "twangy" and less natural to me; with the Fishman blend, I get plenty of bottom from the magnetic pickup without sacrificing a realistic, woody tone.

Addendum: Though I referenced this in my review, the other great feature here is that it can be moved from guitar to guitar with little effort..just loosening the strings to reach in and removed the endpin jack. It's also nice not to have to alter a good guitar.

Addendum: Just bought a new Taylor Guitar with the ES system. tried for hours to get it to sound like the Fishman with no luck. Placed the Fishman in and it blows the ES away. I actually modified the battery case on the end of the Taylor to hold my Fishman Jack, and will not be using the ES at all.
