wow, this pickup has blown me away. i was skeptical of emg pushing the x series onto the market in what seemed to me to be a knee jerk reaction to seymour duncans blackouts. blackouts are far more dynamic and versatile pickups than the classic emg 81/85 combo but ive always thought for an ear rumbling, brutal metal crunch emg is still the frontrunner by a long shot. i dropped the 81x and 85x into an ibanez s2170se recently though and have been nothing short of amazed. blackouts and standard 81 and 85 pickups are obsolete in my mind now. all the dynamics and natural sounding warmth of blackouts with those classic emg balls in the rythm parts. they seem to be ever so slightly lower output than standard emgs and a bit lower than blackouts just on sheer volume output. but that's not really a plus or minus in my opinion. im running them through a randall rm100 which is a REALLY loud amp so i just run the volume slightly higher. if your like me and have loved emg's for most of your guitar playing life and wanted the benefits of sd blackouts without losing the signature emg sound that so many love, definitely check out the x series pickups.
