Product Description
Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is known for big fat Texas tone that has been described as "hot, blue, and righteous." Dunlop developed Reverend Willy's strings in collaboration with Billy himself, aiming to make replacement guitar strings that offer a real punch and while remaining articulate and clear when guitarists perform his legendary leads and pinch harmonics.Extra Light guitar string gauges: 7-9-11-20-30-38Jim Dunlop RWN0738 Rwilly Ex Light Gtr Set 7-38 Review
On my second set of Rev. Willy's Mexican Lottery Brand Extra-Light Electric Guitar Strings and really like 5 of them to pieces! These strings are severely superb! They are loaded with high harmonics that are easily coaxed forth into squeals, shrieks, and wails with just the tiniest, loving pinch. The high E string doesn't go dead in a week or two like my last few Ernie Ball Slinky and Super Slinky high E strings and their desire to leap into pinch harmonics is so sensitive that I had to roll back the tone knob on my guitar a little (but not too much because even tiny strings like to go "djent, djent, djent" all the way home). And then there's the psuedo-vibrato done with fingers or hands. Very easy to get that "how I wish this sounded 1/1,000,000 as good as B.B. King" and the obnoxious "you paid HOW MUCH for a floating bridge whammy to do this?!" effects with these strings. And now the gripe:
The 0.011 gauge string (the "G" string in standard tuning) was initially too slippery to stick in the guitar's locking tuning peg (something an 0.011 from Ernie Ball does with problema nada). After a few days of use, though, it's settled or nestled in there so that 1-step bends can be done all day without issue (too ascared to bend it further). The other five strings will let me bend 2+step bends without issue, so it's like complaining about song selection of a tap-dancing elephant.
I think 9s are more than light enough, but going to excesses like this is more than fine and lots of fun.
