Fender 099-1447-100 4-Bolt Vintage-Style Neck Plate Plain - Chrome Review

First off, I did not want the fender logo on the plates I ordered.
These plates are being used for strat style guitars that are not
fender even though I do own many fender guitars.
The plates are well made, and the hole pattern matches the guitars I am
using them on.
This is a great price, for exactly what I wanted.

MXR Flanger Effect Pedal Reissue Review

I was looking for an original from the 70s initially, but found that they tended to cost even more than the reissue, so for pure convenience I went with the reissue and I was not disappointed.

It seems very well built, with solid metal casing and quality pots. The only thing that feels at all cheap is the thin dc power adapter cable, but it seems far more convenient than the original fat AC cable coming out.

The sound range you can create is quite versatile for a flanger. Once you get the hang of what each pot does you can quickly create anything from classic tough sweeping jet plane sounds, to softer "chorus" type effects.

It seems to really excels at its job when you provide it with a noisy or distorted signal. Such as in a chain after a distortion pedal or with a synth using a very open filter or with a noise source added to the signal chain. Part of this is probably that the effect is very easy to hear in the higher register, so the more complexity you add in the high end the more you can hear it chew that signal.

I would say it has some very specific classic uses and clearly isn't for everyone, but it does what it does extremely well.

Boss SL-20 Slicer Pedal Audio Pattern Processor Review

What it does:

The Boss SL-20 is a Panner/Gater with 50 rhythmic patterns some of which have a fair amount of pitch shifting. It really shines in stereo where you can get some pretty interesting panning effects including several "3D" effects where the sound seams to move around you in 3 dimensions (duh). The panning is synced to the rhythm which you can adjust through either; tap tempo, a dial or a midi clock (such as those found on drum machines)

You can adjust the attack, how fast each "slice" rolls on and the duty how long each "slice" lasts.

Additionally rather than a wet/dry mix you have separate volume controls for both the dry (unaffected) tone and the wet (effected) tone.

You can also use a separate expression pedal to control the different parameters such as attack and duty.

O.K. so now we know what it does. Let's talk about how well it does it and how useful the effect is.

Playing through it takes a little getting used to. It works well with creating a groove type rhythm with long sustained notes. It also sounds cool when you "play to" the rhythm as in you strike the note/chord just as the attack is swelling. Poorly timed notes/chords are noticeable even when playing through a compressor. This can getting kind of tricky as I don't believe all of the patterns are in 4/4 timing and there can be several (or many) "slices" per beat.

I think that the patterns sort of lend themselves to techno style rhythms, but certainly open the doors for creative expression as long as you have an open mind. I tend to play pretty heavily distorted tones which really lend themselves to this effect. I don't think it works nearly as well with clean tones. Though I am sure with enough experimentation, you could get some pretty cool sounds out of it even with a clean tone.

The coolest thing about this effect is that it will get you jamming. Between all the variables, you could spend hundreds of hours experimenting with riffs.

It is not the type of effect that you will have on in every song, but there are definitely sounds to be discovered that would be impossible without this effect.

As far as I am concerned it is a keeper.

Aaron

I almost forgot to mention. There is a sound on sound feature that allows you to record a short phrase and then play over the top of it. I rarely use this feature because I have a dedicated looping pedal but it is definitely cool bonus.

Levy's Leathers M25-BRN 50's Style RnR Leather Strap,Brown Review

I didn't have time to get the Copper Peace saddle leather Old Style skinny strap (http://shop.copperpeace.com/collections/guitar-straps/products/oldstyle-guitar-strap-saddle-brown) so I dropped by the local shop and picked up this lone strap. I have been playing guitar and bass for 40 years. Straps have come and gone like the guitars they once held up. My requirements for a strap have been distilled down from flashy, elegant, wide, nylon, leather, snake skin, elastic, foam, plushy and useless to a more austere approach. The strap accomplishes three things very well: It holds the guitar where I need it, It's comfortable and it doesn't draw attention away from the beautiful "flavor of the month" guitar I'm playing. And, I don't feel like I'm hiding behind a sofa. No, it does not have that "look at me" quality some people require. But the way I see it, if you need a flashy strap to produce good music or to enhance your "stage presence".....you have much bigger worries in life to tend to.

Fender Frontman 212R 100-Watt 2x12-Inch Guitar Combo Amp - Red Review

First I bought a FM212DSP on the recommendation of a sales guy in a store. That was my mistake. I was looking for that "Clean Fender Sound" without paying the big bucks.
Well, here it is friends, in all it's glory. Tons of headroom, so clean it can squeak if you want. Tele players should fall all over this thing as a practice amp. Young players who are not heavy metal will absolutely love this for the price. It's LOUD, it's clean, and there is a fair amount of distortion in it, although you have to coax the distortion out of it. Add a Danelectro Distortion pedal of some sort off Amazon for distortion and you're home. I own nine amps, including Fender, Crate, and Peavey tube models, and this is cleaner. If you play C&W, look no further. If you fingerpick, this is your amp. Electrified banjo, mandolin or violin? This is the amp!
But, if you follow the darker side, keep looking...
