12AX7 / ECC83 Preamp Vacuum Tube Review

I was wondering what they used in the latest Mac Preamps, finally I have figured out this is it. I wanted to put it in my vintage Mac and maybe get the sound of the new models (that is my dream anyway). To my surprise, it is pretty close!! It is put in only the 2nd stage amp tube position, and it is crystal clear! Great soundstage, a bit bright but still smooth (not a tele), it is punchy and lots of detail! Modern sound! I am mixing it up with some NOS europe tubes and the result is just right!

I have tried so many already (GE, RCA british, Telefunken, old Tung Sol, new Tung Sol) and this turned out to give me a middle ground, not too bright, quite balanced, quite smooth with a bit of grain, good sound stage, lots of detail. It will depend on your equipment and taste, but I really like these OEM Mac tubes. I am going to put these in the phono stage next, stage tuned.
